Very compelling, but this one is also heartbreaking and haunting. For fans of the series, this is a departure from previous books.
This was harder to get through than the earlier books in the series. Darker, more personal, more unsettling, and less believable. It was also frustrating to discover that so much was left unresolved at the end of this book. Still, I love spending time with Gamache and the residents of Three Pines, and I'm certainly going to be reading the next in the series.

I did not see this coming and am very curious to get the next book and see where this goes. I mean, it has to be going somewhere, right? There were just so many things unresolved. The writing though...fantastic.
Absolutely beautiful. While it’s not my favorite of the series (so far) plot-wise, it’s probably the best one writing-wise. This book really captures the essence of Autumn, from the flurry of the end of summer all the way through the first chill in the air as the holiday season (rapidly) approaches. Would be a great October read if you’re creating a Fall TBR.
Great mystery, lots of twists and turns and though I didn’t love the ending, it was a surprise! I love this series and was happy to be back in Three Pines for 500 pages.
Loved this one. I found myself laughing out loud many times, not because this book is a comedy but because the writer is so dang clever with words and describing mannerisms and quirks. I loved Marc the horse and Marc the human, and the horse-moose. I'm convinced now that I should read Louise Penny rather than listen to, because every sentence contains so much.
Another great installment in Louise Penny's Three Pines series. Unlike most of the other books so far in this series, this one left quite a few questions hanging at the end. I feel the need to move on to the next in the series right away to hopefully get some closure.
I absolutely LOVE Louise Penny's books and the latest two, The Brutal Telling and Bury Your Dead are by far the best yet. It will be a long time before I forget the characters and the stories in this series. She has a trememdous gift for making her characters live and breathe and speak to the reader so clearly that you actually hurt when they are hurting. And the scenery! It makes you want to jump in the car and drive all night to Quebec hoping to be one of the lucky ones who find their way to Three Pines. One final word of advice - never read one of Louise Penny's books when you're hungry - the food descriptions will make you crazy!
As expected, #5 in the Inspector Gamache series did not disappoint. I do hope this particular story is revisited in future installments. Without giving any spoilers, I hope there is more that comes to light regarding this particular crime. I love this series!
