Louise Penny does it again; I may still be heartbroken from the result of this storyline ... no spoilers here, but WHY?! I love the depth of the characters and that I never quite guess who the murderer is until near the very end.

On this reread I listened to the audiobook again. It felt new, as I had forgotten so many details. This is such an enjoyable reading experience. Penny writes characters with depth and great backstories. Making my way slowly through the series.

I'm finally reading Louise Penny, and I really like the series. So far, they've all been 3.5-ish stars for me. I've heard that they get progressively better; we shall see! Some of the characters annoy me, but I'm easily annoyed.

Overall I enjoyed this book, liked the characters and the setting, but once again - as it is an audiobook, I had a hard time listening to it and had to listen to some of the chapters twice as my mind wandered and I fell asleep a couple of times. That skews my review.

The one thing I found totally unsatisfying was the ending (and had to listen to it twice to actually reconcile who did it). I was hoping the author would not bring in a new character out of the blue and while she did not, the culprit of the murder was a bit unbelievable and unrealistic.

I probably won't go out of my way to read the sequel.

I like how this one came together, and I like the juxtaposition of comfort and threat. It's still strange that there's so much murder in this little town, but I like how Penny and her characters acknowledge this. There's not much else I can say without potentially spoiling things, so I'll leave it at that.
