A Caucasian author witnesses the accidental death of her Asian American friend and then proceeds to steal her friend’s manuscript and publish it as her own. This was addictive, thought-provoking and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I loved it.

We use the term “unhinged” a lot in recent times, but meet a protagonist who truly is.

June Hayward, is unlikeable and very unapologetic about it - matter of fact according to her, everyone else owes her an apology.

I really enjoyed this book, and I think it stirred up thoughts about not only representation but also who is allowed to tell a story and who we give a platform to.

It's such an interesting book.   I wish I could put this story's intriguing ideas and viewpoints into words.  I loved that the story is told from the perspective of the author who steals another's work.  It dragged a bit in the middle but otherwise was a quick read.

R.F. Kuang really knows how to write! This book was complex and interesting although sometimes hard to read. You have to concentrate quite hard in certain areas but it is very good and worth the strain (if you can call it that). She delves deep into important issues we face in modern publishing such as racism and forced diversity which is very important to educate people on, especially people who don't have these experiences! It healthy to read about as well as entertaining and it didn't get repetitive or boring which I can sometimes find with certain authors who don't recognise how forced and recycled it sounds. As a white person myself, I feel it is very important to educate myself on these issues, and R.F. Kuang helped me on my journey. The characters (especially June) are funky and obsessive and challenging which makes it all the more fun to read as its slightly harder to connect with the characters because they have done questionable things, and I love it!! Just a truly fascinating book that I shall not forget easily :)
