absolutely delicious story.

jealousy explored through multiple angles in the publishing industry. Athena, a successful asian american author, and June, a white woman with only a flop debut, are frenemies. While hanging out celebrating Athena’s latest multimillion success they engage in a pancake eating contest and Athena chokes and dies. June has stolen Athena’s latest unseen manuscript and edits and publishes it as her own, publishing under an ethnically suggestive pseudonym. She then struggles to keep up with her lies and battle the ghosts of her past.

a main character who is so terrible but makes you feel absolutely gross for feeling sympathy for while also seeing so blatantly the racism and micro aggressions she is doing daily. an interesting look at racism, publishing, and jealousy.

This book goes by quick. When I had the moment to read I was devouring the pages. Not just that but showing the behind the scenes of the publishing world on how they advertise a white woman’s “book” about the Chinese Laborers during WWI. They market her name as Juniper Song previously written under June Hayward.
This book highlights racism in the most honest sometimes brutal way. I think that was the exact reasoning to having it in the pov of June. I didn’t feel sorry for June lol not even once…😬 however I really enjoyed the ending.

I got the opportunity to see & hear Rebecca speak about this novel and it was very enlightening. She likes to write ‘evil or bad’ characters and definitely spot on. Athena wasn’t perfect either. She also stole stories from others, in a different manner.
You’re left thinking, who is allowed to write about other’s history?
Rebecca mentioned how we should be judging others on their writing, not on what they write about.
Please look over the trigger warnings.

Well if there was one way to get me out of a reading slump it was picking up this book. Rebecca has done it again. I read the entire thing in one sitting, I could not put it down.

The main character is as insufferable and delusional as you would expect. Her justifications for her actions were wild to me, but I also believe that there are people out there who think like June does.

The exploration of racism within the publishing industry and the insight into the industry was incredibly interesting. Also, the exploration into the online world as a writer was an interesting take. The ending took me completely by surprise and I was hooked.

A completely satirical look into the publishing world and life as an author, I don’t think anyone else could have handled the premise of this book quite as well. A complete 180 from Babel, so if you’re looking for that type of book again this is definitely not it. I can’t wait to see where R F Kuang goes next.

(I read this as an ARC) umm all I'm gonna say is Kuang is clearly familiar with the mind of the self-victimizing white author. She captures that mindset so perfectly: while still humanizing that main character, she also provides us with all the self-rationalization it takes to steal from the marginalized and still think you're the one suffering for it. Rebecca is insane for this one and she is incapable of writing a bad book
