When the author says torturous slow burn she means it. The humor was still great, but the mystery was a tad hard to follow

This was one of my most anticipated books of the year because I love this series so much, and unfortunately I was disappointed.
This book was so slow and I had a very hard time getting through it. The plot is feeling more and more convoluted as each book goes on. I am fine with there being a prophecy with twists and turns, but it is getting to be a lot for me. I had honestly hoped this was the end of the series because I don’t feel like this series should be more than a trilogy. It feels like the plot is being dragged out much longer than necessary.
I love a slow burn and that hasn’t been an issue for me throughout this series. I did notice that it seems every single character needs to be paired off with someone else, but I like all the couples enough that it isn’t a big issue for me.
There are so many characters now in this series. I like them all well enough, but it feels like we never really get into each character before we are whipped to another POV.
I want to keep loving this series and maybe on a re-read I’ll like this one more.

After scoring Assistant and Apprentice to the Villain 4.5 and 4.25 stars respectively, this was one of my most anticipated reads of 2025. However, it ended up being my least favourite of the series so far and I was left feeling a bit disappointed.
Accomplice to the Villain moves at a slower pace than the previous two books, and I felt that the story was being dragged out - it just didn't capture my attention like the other books did. This book is told from 7 different POV and the constant switching between characters got a bit jarring after a while. I also correctly predicted the major plot twist in this book, so the element of surprise just wasn't there when all was revealed.
The characters are very loveable though and I can't get enough of the humour. It was about timeEvie and Trystan declared their feelings and got intimate, and it was fun following the developing romances between the minor characters. I definitely noticed some sparks between Gideon and Keely in the previous book, so I'm glad the author decided to explore that connection further. And Becky and Blade finally confessing their feelings for each other too?! Awwww!!
Despite my criticisms, I will still read the final book when it comes out because I want to know how it all ends (and see how many things I predicted correctly!).

I can’t believe i already finished this book. And what a ride it was. This whole series will forever remain my comfort series from now on!
Ngl i had to reread the first two books to somehow remember where we left off and that was a good decision! Because i forgot so many twist and turns from book 2 that reading book 3 without it would’ve been a mistake.
I loved that we had more POVs (especially Kingsley!!!) to read from to see the story getting told not only from Evie and The Villain but also from Clare, Gideon, Kingsley etc. That made the whole experience even better!
I also will need book 4 asap so i can finally know how this story will end after THAT bombshell!!
Easy 5 ⭐️ read! And ofc fav of the year!
