This is one of my very favorite books. Beautifully written, compelling plot and characters.
I’ve never actually read any Somerset Maugham (he is now added to my to-read list) but The Letter is a favorite film. So naturally I was attracted to the premise of this novel. It didn’t disappoint.

I'm not entirely sure what the point of this book is. There are some brilliant snapshots of daily life and some truly beautiful phrases but the story leaves much to be desired. There is also an unignorable inconsistency that forms a crucial part of the story.

so um this was incredibly well written and gripping and wonderful but OH MY GOD. when i found out it was based on historical shit?!? crazy i’m even more obsessed! so amazing and i will read more of his work fo sure!
