This one is more tense and sad than the first, and definitely has some problematic moments from a modern perspective (see content warnings for more info but be warned of spoilers). It's very clear it's an old book!

Edit: something very dark happens later in this series so I've come back to add to this review that I would no longer recommend the series!

So this is the second book in the Poldark saga. I loved the tv series and got the box set of the books as a Yule present. So I knew how things were going to go, but was curious to find out the differences always present in screen adaptations.  I don't want to drop spoilers, so I can't say much here. This book is a heavy one and I cried at the end. My heart is sore and sorrowful.  There are some amusing funny parts earlier on, and period typical prejudices and stereotypes. For a book written in the 1940s and by a man, it's not too bad in its historical inaccuracies. Mainly to do with women's clothes, and it's clear he knew very little about babies.

If you can cope with some sad themes, I highly recommend this book, and the series it belongs to.
