A hidden plot is revealed. Are they friend or foe? Irene and company have managed to survive again. But a surprise reveal at the end throws everything we think we know into doubt.

Not everything in the past stays in the past. Some come back to haunt you while others are for your blood.
Irene is human after all. Our favourite librarian/spy has too many things to worry about in this book. There were some revelations I could see coming from book one while some stumped me completely. Cogman does a good job of letting red herrings out for you to chase for a while.
A side plot blooms which could be even bigger than the main story arc. No we are not talking about renegade librarians. This plot started showing up in the last book and by the end of this, dropped such a bombshell that took everyone by surprise.
All the opinions that you might have formed so far since book 1, it's time to let it go. You're in for a rude awakening.

This story was good, with plenty of twists and turns, but it also felt a bit rushed or shallow in spots. I think the plot could have used some more depth to avoid feeling like it was a filler story, just setting up the final installment in the series. I do really like Catherine and can’t wait for more of her!
