Same pacing issues as every other book, but unfortunately, the beginning 75% wasn't very compelling and the plot twist was so obvious, saw it from book 1 and having the same bad guys again? Over it. The epilogue was quite intriguing though and I'm interested to see what will happen next

Not everything in the past stays in the past. Some come back to haunt you while others are for your blood.

Irene is human after all. Our favourite librarian/spy has too many things to worry about in this book. There were some revelations I could see coming from book one while some stumped me completely. Cogman does a good job of letting red herrings out for you to chase for a while.

A side plot blooms which could be even bigger than the main story arc. No we are not talking about renegade librarians. This plot started showing up in the last book and by the end of this, dropped such a bombshell that took everyone by surprise.

All the opinions that you might have formed so far since book 1, it's time to let it go. You're in for a rude awakening.

The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars rather than 5 is because it was so good that I am desperate for the next installment, with no idea when it will be released! I flew through this (as with every book in the series), enjoying each and every character, and feeling horrified at several of them. Without spoiling anything, I'll just share that this is a high-tech romp through several worlds... and some familiar faces pop along the way. We get to know Lord Silver's niece quite well, and, luckily, she is not just a brat with stubborn beliefs of what a librarian should be.

If you love this series (or any steampunk fantasy involving dragons, fae, and librarians), grab this from the library ASAP.
