A staggering, monumental work that takes the reader on a tour through history, geography, culture, philosophy, religion, and the author's personal experience in the Putumayo, a region that, perhaps principally because of this book, should be seen as being of great significance to the disciplines of anthropology, history, and postcolonial theory. This book is highly interesting, sometimes deeply disturbing, sometimes inspiring, and at times reads like a novel, full of Taussig's trademark poetic prose and entertaining anecdotes. Taussig is a great writer, a great anthropologist, and to me this is undoubtedly his magnum opus.
