Lakota Woman, by Mary Brave Bird

The fight for our land is at the core of our existence, as it has been for the last two hundred years. Once the land is gone, then we are gone too.

This book was very interesting, a seemingly uncut, deep-dive into Mary Brave Bird's life. It left me breathless and on the edge of my seat at times. I can't imagine what it would have been like to live through these events myself, but I got the impression that Mary was an immensely strong-willed person with a beautiful heart.

At times Mary's tellings of events seemed absurd to me, but I reminded myself she was recalling things as she'd seen them, most of which happened when she was very young, and also that the U.S. has done some pretty absurd things to protect capital and keep vulnerable peoples oppressed all over the world, both in the past and to this day.

What ended up catching my interest unexpectedly, were the spiritual ceremonies that Mary witnessed and oftentimes participated in, and descriptions of the Indian medicine practiced by Leonard Crow Dog and other Native American medicine men. She described it beautifully, and I've been inspired to educate myself on these matters further.

Overall, I'd say that this was a very worthwhile read. Support Land Back!
