Nothing more I can say I haven't already said. This author amazes me how she keeps churning out top class thrillers. Number 5 couldn't come soon enough!!
#4 in the D.I. Kim Stone series did not disappoint! I loved it! Even though I guessed a few things ahead of time, this really didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story. Most of them really were guesses until the truth was finally revealed. I love getting to know D.I. Kim Stone and like how she is slowly, slowly growing and branching out in her relationships. She is such a genuine person, even she is a bit prickly. Definitely one of my favourite mystery series'!!
The dead don’t tell secrets… unless you listen.
The girl’s smashed-in face stared unseeing up to the blue sky, soil spilling out of her mouth. A hundred flies hovered above the bloodied mess.
Westerley research facility is not for the faint-hearted. A ‘body farm’ investigating human decomposition, its inhabitants are corpses in various states of decay. But when Detective Kim Stone and her team discover the fresh body of a young woman, it seems a killer has discovered the perfect cover to bury their crime.
Then a second girl is attacked and left for dead, her body drugged and mouth filled with soil. It’s clear to Stone and the team that a serial killer is at work – but just how many bodies will they uncover? And who is next?
As local reporter, Tracy Frost, disappears, the stakes are raised. The past seems to hold the key to the killer’s secrets – but can Kim uncover the truth before a twisted, damaged mind claims another victim …?
This is book 4 in the series. What I like about this series of books is Kim Stone, yes, she has her issues, but they're not brought up every other page. She just gets on with the job.
Once again, Marsons has written a great story, there's lot of twists and turns in this book that keep you turning the page. This story is based around a body farm where people donate their bodies for research (can't imagine it myself) so, it makes for a different back drop that a lot of the books out there at the moment. The build up of tension was great, and the fast moving plot really made it a page turner.

I am a huge fan of this author and her books. I couldn't wait to read this one and meet D.I. Kim Stone once again. I was not disappointed.
Throughout this series the lead female of Kim has found herself investigating some horrific crimes, and this book is no different. We not only have a brilliant murder mystery to try and solve as we read the book, but we also get far more information about Kim and her past. She shows a bit of a softer side at times as she empathises with other characters' situations. Of course she still has her hard exterior on show most of the time.
We discover that some of the characters we have previously met also have pasts which relate to this particular story. This leads to some twists and turns which you won't see coming.
I love the author, love her books, and this story goes to show once again what a brilliant writer she is. Bring on the next one!
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Review:
The fourth outing for Kim Stone sees the fiesty Detective and her team on the hunt for a serial killer with a distinctive modus operandi. The clever writing style with great attention to detail really makes you feel as if you are there with the characters, part of the investigation.
This is a particularly horrendous case that is so compelling I read it in a straight sitting, completely unaware of anything happening around me (good job my husband is very self-sufficient!). This book is suspenseful and utterly addictive, with lots of twists and turns and a thrilling conclusion.
I'm such a fan of Kim Stone and really look forward to each new case. With thousands of five star reviews for her first three Detective Kim Stone books, Angie Marsons is proving herself to be one of the country's foremost authors of crime. The compelling Play Dead will surely swell that number even more.

Play Dead
4 Stars
A routine visit to the UK's new body farm takes a sinister turn when D.I. Kim Stone and her team stumble upon a fresh corpse that should not be there.
A solid addition to the series although some of the twists are glaringly obvious and the convenient coincidences require a healthy suspension of disbelief.
The character development is strong, especially the insights into Tracy Frost, the journalist we love to hate, as well as the additional details regarding Kim's years with her loving foster parents.
The romance element is the weakest part of the story as Kim has yet to come to terms with the traumas of her past. Consequently, the inclusion of a potential love interest at this point is a waste.
Despite these issues, Marsons is a gifted writer and her style ratchets up both the tension and suspense toward the gripping climax and resolution.
Overall, a compelling and entertaining read and I look forward to the next book.
