This book was advertised as the story of a woman learning more about her family’s history and it’s secrets. In actuality, it reads more like a young woman’s therapy journal. The writing is overall confusing, repetitive, nonlinear, and bitter. She still has a long way to go in terms of healing and I truly wish her the best on her journey.

About the experiences growing up as a mixed race Afro-Latina dealing with racism, sexism and identity issues. Carmen’s parents are a piece of work. It does seem that Carmen is still raw from her parent’s deception. I while I enjoyed reading the book, reading about Wong’s parents was very emotionally exhausting
Graphic: Emotional abuse and Racism
