This is the story of a pair of shoes accidentally taken from a gym. There are 2 main characters, Nisha a wealthy American woman and Sam, a middle class Londoner. Nishas very expensive shoes were taken by Sam in accident from the gym. Sam wears the shoes to a job meeting and feels so confident. She is having trouble with her husband who is suffering from depression. Sam is also afraid she is going to be fired. Nishas husband meets her right after her shoes are taken and kicks her out of their hotel room and cuts her off. Nisha has no money or passport. Her son is in a boarding school in America. Nisha has no friends to call. Her former assistant calls her and tells her that a man will meet her at a bar. Only he never shows. Except he did, saw Sam with the shoes and gave her the thumb drive of incriminating evidence against her husband. Nisha gets a job at the hotel her husband is living at as a maid. Her she meets a wonderful friend who helps her. Nishas husband refuses to give her anything unless she can find the shoes They track down Sam and they discover that the shoes has diamonds hidden in them. Nisha gives the shoes and almost all the diamonds to her ex and gets a settlement. Then she shows him the incriminating evidence to make sure he keeps paying. Then she has him arrested for stolen diamonds. Sams husband agrees to take antidepressants and they are in the path to reconcilation. She did get fired but finds a new job where she takes over her old boss. The whole story is about having girlfriends and the need to have a sisterhood.

I really like how Moyes can handle heavy emotions sensitively, but can also delve into the ridiculous. Parts of this book were almost slapstick, and I was so here for it.

There's no getting away from it; the first half is pretty bleak, and the toxic masculinity is alive and well in an awful way. You know (or hope) that things are going to improve but for a while it feels like a drag getting to that point. Once Nisha and Sam's paths cross properly then the story gets really fun, and not a moment too soon.

My absolute favourite part of this book was seeing four completely different women come together and basically plan a heist. It's so much fun and pretty empowering. And the end manages not to be too predictable; there are touches that I didn't see coming, so even though it pretty much ends as expected, it is fun to see how we get there.
