Full disclosure: this book genre (whatever the heck it is) is not what I prefer to read. I decided to read outside of my comfort zone and, I have to tell you, I regret it. This book is a mess at best. Perhaps there are better examples of this type of book out there. I will not be looking for them.

I cannot understand how this book is almost 500 pages long. There is no story here. It’s like the author wrote a much of spice scenes and then tried to tie them together with a weak and incoherent story. We go back and forth endlessly. They break up. They get back together. She doesn’t trust him. He doesn’t trust her. He runs away. She runs away. They fight and bicker. She says sassy things. He gets all hot and bothered by her defiance. Somehow that translates into him needing to abuse her. She gets mad but then goes back anyway. Sunrise… sunset. It’s the same thing over and over again. It’s repetitive to the point of madness. Dahlia and Kane, quite literally have the same conversation a half dozen times at least. He describes her over and over again. I was dumbfounded that 300+ pages into this thing I was getting another description of his scars, tattoos, face, hair, and eyes. We know what he looks like. This dude had been described in extreme detail. Also, can he stop with the eyes changing color thing. That’s not how eyes work. He says her eyes are yellow at one point.

I am assuming that the draw of these books is the spice. Even that for monotonous and repetitive. Same thing over and over. Same dialogue over and over. I was so over this book that towards the end I was skipping the entire scene just so we could move on and get to the conclusion.

Also, this was supposed to be a “hockey romance” where the heck is the hockey? They barely play. It has almost no importance to the story whatsoever. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why it was included.

This book is a miss. If the entire genre is like this I do not understand the widespread appeal. I feel dumber for having read it and will return to books that actually care about the story they are telling. This is not an issue of not checking trigger warnings. It is an issue of the author’s lack of talent.

The relationship depicted in this book is extremely abusive. Full stop.
