Just couldn't get into it - had to work too hard to keep all the characters and their issues straight

I didn't realize until I finished the book that this was book 1 of a trilogy! I didn't have too much trouble following along, there were a few vague references to earlier life events that made me wonder why they weren't fully explained, but overall it wasn't too hard to follow along.
The story was not a gripping or dramatic page turner, but more of a cozy "let's follow these characters during their lives" kind of story. I'm curious enough to go back and read the first book and then the last one.

In this volume of the trilogy, I had a lot more patience for the characters, who seemed to mature immensely. Unfortunately, I struggled a bit as the number of characters increased and the setting expanded across oceans - mainly because I was in the middle of a very busy time in my non-reading life and it took a long time to be able to finish the novel. I continued to enjoy the very strong sense of time and place, though toward the end the years started to fly by a bit too quickly for me. I'm definitely interested to see where the final installment goes, particularly in terms of the next generation coming of age.

The fine print: received ARC from Edelweiss.

3.5 stars. This book has wayy too much adultery in it. Why can’t people just marry the goddamn right person or divorce their spouse if they’re not happy? The plotline was still fascinating but the cheating was getting tiresome

I picked this book up from a display at my local library around St Patrick’s Day, not realizing it was part of a series. The author does a good job of making this readable as a stand alone book, although the ending makes you want to read the next book so you can have an actual end to the story. I found this book a bit tiresome in spots, with some more interesting story lines given not enough attention, and other less interesting story lines given too much attention. Nothing is really wrapped up in the end, and I suspect the first book ended similarly. A mindless read one review likened to an Irish telenovela. Worth reading if you’re in need of a fluff piece read. Will I read the next one? Probably not - I’ll just look up a summary.
