the book is too long and I started reading it far too long ago

(wrong edition, the one I was reading had 2000+ pages)

My second reading of this book. I read it the first time nearly 14 years ago while pregnant with my third child. This time around I read it aloud to my middle son (age 16) as part of his English literature and I enjoyed it SO much more. I don't know if that is because I made sure to read the Robin Buss translation, or if I just wasn't in the right head space to read it when I was pregnant. At any rate, my son and I absolutely LOVED it, and we're very much looking forward to watching the movie adaptation.

Very enjoyable, even if it took me a long time to get through.
Some favorite lines:
Franz, on the contrary, ate like a man who for the last four or five months had been condemned to partake of Italian cookery—that is, the worst in the world.
Mme. de Villefort at this really did turn pale, and was very nearly angry with this household plague, who answered to the name of Edward...

Another all-time favorite. Life-altering book. If you've seen the movie...you have no idea what this book is about, sorry! Dumas is a master.

Really long, with numerous side plots and chapters about stocks but one of the best revenge stories ever told

Started off reading this rip-roaring roller coaster of revenge with my daughter but it was a bit heavy going for a turn-taking exercise and I ended up finishing it in audio format. It's amazing how much detail he goes into about everything. Every character has their own little subplot and their own character development. There are plots and disguises and poisons and misteries and love triangles all over the place. It's not wordy in the way an 800 page American thriller would be, but he's certainly filling in every inch of blank space in our picture of events. Very nice.

The first and possibly only time that I'll ever enjoy reading through a character spending six longs years in a dungeon. While the large cast of characters quickly became overwhelming, the tension and drama was powerful.
