Ranmaru never disappoints!
There was a whole lot of story, without feeling like we were being bombarded with information. Back-story to both MC's, without being crammed or unnatural. A really good exploration of Shangri-La, the Birds and the Teasers. A really great, original concept that gives the story room to breathe.
It wasn't rushed, it wasn't PWP and it wasn't all the things I was afraid it might be, when I read it was about a male brothel. This is one of those brothels that is well-run, with a respected/rich owner who takes care of his Birds first and clients second. Everyone is happy, loved, respected and well-treated, but Phi is an exception without anyone realising it, with a dark past that it slowly being explored.

3.5 stars. Zaria's art will always be a five though.

Remueve emociones y no deja indiferente. Estoy deseoso de leer el volumen 2.

Read this about a year or so ago.

Still feel it’s one of the best manga when it comes to relationship-building as well as establishing intimacy (as of now, don’t know how it’ll pan out in the future).

I came in expecting it to be purely raunchy, so it surprised me, to say the least.

What else…

I don’t know how to explain it exactly, but Birds of Shangri-la gives me the energy of this Tumblr quote:
“He has that sadness in his eyes that you only see in Eastern European gay porn”

Hopes this convinces anyone to read this, haha.

Side note…
I’d say the main thing that’d turn people off is the idea of “turning“ a straight dude gay, as well as the general premise. The former is certainly a thing, especially as the MC claims he’s straight, and he’s dropped into an island of dudes whose sole purpose is to “pleasure” their clientele.

If you want my opinion…I think it sets up a tension that makes the development of their relationship more…rewarding?

The relationship between the main character and the Shangri-la “bird” has a strong emotional core, and I think it adds an element to their already complex relationship.

Huge meh. I was really here for the idea of a brothel, where dudes are just hanging out and having fun, but then we got this main character, for god knows what reason. There is repeated focus on how everyone here is of their own volition and if they do not enjoy it - they just leave, and then we get a character who is here, because he really needs money and has no other choice. All of sex scenes with him do not feel consensual, he is constantly refusing and Phi is just like: "haha, how cute". There are painful stereotypes about how all gay dudes just want to make a straight guy gay and how if you are bottom in bed, you are a bottom in life and this was just tiring.
Now, I could start talking about how there is an issue in publishing manga, where authors are allowed to just throw everything out there without having to put their name on it, but I can actually respect privacy, it just hurts that someone uses it to do something hurtful, like spreading this narratives.
