I know I'm bucking all the 5 star reviews out there, but while I learned a lot from this book about how risky things were to air crews in WWII I especially in the Pacific Theater, how appalling the circumstances to which the Japanese subjected prisoners of war, and what it took for many of those prisoners to recover (if they ever did), I don't think that the story was told especially well. That it was extensively researched I have no doubt, the bibliography and acknowledgements are substantial but the telling of the tale seemed disjointed to me. I didn't find this to be a compelling "page turner", every time I felt myself starting to get drawn into Louie's story there was a random anecdote from some completely unrelated person. If this were a history of POW 's in the Pacific then that would make sense but as part of one man's biography I found them to be jarring. YMMV

This book tells the story of Louie Zamperini, Olympic athlete and World War II bombardier. A child of Italian immigrants, Louie had a strong penchant for trouble as a youngster that was only outgrown once he found his love of running. His record-breaking times led to a scholarship to USC and ultimately the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. Shortly after, he served our country as a bombardier, flying missions over the Pacific Ocean. During one fateful rescue mission, his B-24 crashed. All aboard died except Louie and 2 others. Adrift for 47 days (47 days!), they faced starvation, shark attacks, storms, and enemy fire from overhead. As if that wasn't bad enough, they endured unimaginable hardship after being taken as Prisoners of War by the Japanese. Mr. Zamperini survived insufferable conditions. I don't want to sound cliche, but I was honestly amazed by his strength and resolve. He experienced many things that would make an ordinary person give up, but he never did. His story is truly amazing.
It was well written and a fascinating story.
It would make a great movie.

I think that the words "amazing" and "heroic" and "brave" are often overused to describe things, events, or people that aren't truly amazing, heroic, or brave. Reading this account of one WWII POW and his companions really does help one to understand the brave, heroic, and amazing actions that can be performed by so-called "average" people. This was an brilliant book that was written incredibly well.
5 stars for Unbroken. This is the story of Louis Zamperini who went to hell and back twice during his lifetime. This is a wonderfully written history of his life and it gives me a new appreciation for U.S. veterans and POW’s.
I would write more of review, but don’t want to spoil for anyone who has not read it yet.
Highly recommended!
