This book is phenomenal. It's so wonderfully written that it seems like a piece of fiction. I was completely engrossed by the journey and the horrendous events that at times, it felt like a suspense novel - you never knew what was going to happen. I actually found myself looking up the people from the book to find out what happened to them because I couldn't handle not knowing.
Apart from the story, I especially enjoyed learning about a part of WWII that I didn't know much about - the war in the Pacific and Japan.
I highly recommend this book.

Unbroken is the perfect word to describe Louis Zamperini. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand tells the stunning story of possibly the most well-known American Pacific POW from WWII. It was astounding to read of the abuse and starvation Zamperini suffered at the hands of his captors and still survived. And the redemption he found for himself and forgiveness for the guards are inspiring. This was a great read.
Great book. It's hard to believe someone lived through all of this.
It is amazing what the human spirit can endure. The portrayal of surviving all those days in the ocean is incredible. But that is only the prelude to the hell of being a POW. Again, incredible what Louis endures, including so many dreams that are crushed (e.g., running in the Olympics). Terrific book.
My favorite book of all time

Our next book club book...looking forward to reading this!.....and, now I am done and cannot find words to describe this book. I am so glad I read it, but it was incredibly sad in my opinion.
It took me a long time to get into this one. A coworker gave me the hardcover when she was done with it and I read a little bit but I was still very burned out on reading for school at the time, and then I began walking a lot for my stupid health, and there went my time to sit down and read a book. I eventually decided if I wanted to get through it, I would need to do an audiobook. So I did. This is why it took me so long to get through it -- it wasn't a reflection on the quality of the book at all! Really good narration from Edward Herrmann. He pronounces some words a little weirdly, but it was overall excellent. 64% into the audiobook, I had an extremely slow day at work and checked out the ebook so I could get to the end faster. This was a hell of a wild story!
Wow. I hadn't realized how little I knew about the experience of Pacific POWs in WWII. The story is haunting, horrifying, and remarkable; Louis Zamperini was an amazing man! Hillenbrand's writing style doesn't appeal to me, so it was a slog to get through, but the story will stay with me for a long time.
I can't imagine going to see the movie. The mental images are powerful and disturbing enough without the visual ones added in. Wow. How can people be so deliberately cruel to each other?
