February book club book. Apparently we're on a POW-story kick! I really liked this story - it's unbelievable and true. Amazing.

This book is fantastic. It is so sad, but also very uplifting. The writing is unapologetic and narrative. The characters are deep and interesting; it is obvious that Hillenbrand spent a lot of time researching for this book. Anyone who is interested in WWII will like it, and even if you aren't, it's mostly a story about humanity during a crisis. I highly recommend this book.

I'm ready to see the movie. This man was super human, it's almost unbelievable what he endured.

I am about a fourth of the way through and although I am learning lots about WW II, I am not enthralled yet. Since many people have highly recommended this book, I will keep reading.

Now almost half way. I am hooked. Fascinating story but definitely disturbing.

A well-researched, breathtaking story that tells the tale of Louis Z.

Even though the narrative sometimes leaves Louis high and dry, Hillenbrand gives a comprehensive and detailed account of the events that took place during Louis' journey through World War 2. I adored the historical aspects of this book, but I felt that Hillenbrand wasn't able to capture Louis' essence.

Louis felt detached from his own story. Hillenbrand goes on many asides to highlight the historical aspect of this story, but, in doing so, it undercuts the time we get to just focus on Louis. I just couldn't connect with Louis, which made me have a hard time getting through this book.

Overall, I am glad that I read this book. With numerous WW2 stories, this highlighted an aspect of the war that I wasn't pervy too. Although Louis' story was remarkable, I feel inundated with WW2 stories from non-POC, and I am wondering where are my stories of POC during this time. There's so much literature focused on the white man's experience in WW2, but what about the POC?

Very moving and eye opening

this is a really good book, mostly because Laura Hillenbrand is an amazing author when it comes to historical stories [albeit, a bit dramatized in the sense she wasn't there and is relying on the story telling process]. this story made me think about WWII and the Pearl Harbor attacks differently, it laces individual emotions in with the facts from a history book.

Fully amazing and inspirational. Well-written. Riveting. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I can't imagine a person who wouldn't like it. Though it is a true story, detailing fully fact-checked historical events, it reads more like a novel in many places. "Characters" are fully developed. The people and places are made tangible by Hillenbrand. This is no dry, historical narrative. It was also very interesting to read it with J. It's not really a typical read-aloud book, and, especially at first, I didn't feel like it worked well in that regard. But soon I was glad to be reading it with him, as there is a lot to discuss. This book is a home-run, for me. 100%. A++.
