I gave up halfway through. Well written and interesting just not my thing at all!

Amazing story!

This book was VERY good. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is just because, personally, some of the sections of the book were very difficult to read, and that detracted from my reading experience. However, the entire story is true, and all of it is incredibly well written! This is definitely an incredible book, and I would suggest it to anyone, especially people who dislike biographies or nonfiction. This reads like fiction! The amount of work and research that the author put into it is incredible! As I read, I learned a lot about the Olympics, running, Japan and POWs in World War II, and the Air Force. Fascinating, riveting, and informational. The end will inspire and move you! Definitely something that everyone can benefit from reading!

I couldn't finish this. The writing was so bad....scattered and rambling....I can't believe how many reviews there are saying this book is so great. I am sure Louie's story is phenomenal but you can't tell me that Hillenbrand was the best person to honor his memory.

Very powerful story of a POW in WWII. I learned an incredible amount of historical information regarding a war that is so often told from a European perspective.

Fantastic book. Highly recommended.

I am aware the my birth year of 1936 was exceptionally hot and it was enlightening to learn that the athletic preparations and participation in the Olympics held in Berlin were beyond harrowing. Perhaps this was a portent for the telling of the Odyssey that is incredibly beyond the mythological supreme ordeals of Hercules as related in this awesome work? I have been in awe of the gruesome ordeals reported by James Bradley in "Flyboys", but this book includes passing references to some of those incidents but goes far beyond.
The forgiveness that is expressed in the concluding passages is inspirational and appreciated by the reader although it seems not to have been accepted by the perpetrator.
