I realize that I am in the minority when it comes to this book. But I was SO bored. I got to chapter 9 and was finding reasons to pause it (I was listereading it) and do anything else. I couldn't even get to the part of the book that another friend did before she abandoned it also. She abandoned it for much different reasons than I did. This is a rare case where the movie engaged me more than the book. Not that Louis Zamperini's story is boring...at all. But Hillenbrand's telling of it clearly isn't my cup of tea.

An amazing and heartbreaking book. What these men went through is beyond imaginable and yet they survived a horrible ordeal. Such bravery and determination.

"At that moment, something shifted sweetly inside him. It was forgiveness, beautiful and effortless and complete. For Louie Zamperini, the war was over."

It has been a long time since I've read a non-fiction option that I was engrossed in as much as this book. I listened to this book; read by Edgar Hermann--amazing. This story begins with an introduction to the main character, Louis Zamperini. His childhood and upbringing in Torrence, California is detailed with humour and wonder as he is introduced to the sport of running. He is so accomplished that he becomes a part of the US team at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Louis then enlists in the US Air Force and heads to the Pacific theater. When his plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean, he and two other pilots manage to survive for almost 50 days in two rafts amidst dreadful hunger, thirst, sharks and attacks by Japanese planes. When they are finally captured by the Japanese, Louis is tested once again as he endures almost two years in POW camps. This book was simply incredible--Lauren Hillenbrand's writing is absolutely phenomenal. Every word choice--verb, adjective--is chosen with great care to produce an absolutely compelling book that I highly recommend.
Louis's story was incredible, and I cannot explain how much I enjoyed Hillenbrand's book about his life. Not enough is written about what soldiers in the Pacific went through, and I'm really glad we have not just the story of Louis Zamperini but also the stories of some of the men that he served with.
We listened to this on CD as we drove to and from AZ. It was fascinating, seriously! I had no idea that Japan was so evil during WWII. And I had not clue that anyone could survive so much...crashing a plane into the ocean, being stranded in the ocean for over a month with little food or water and shark attacks galore, interrogation camps, POW camp after POW camp....incredible story. I also have to add that the running at the beginning of the story was quite amazing this guy was a natural athlete.
Loved the added information to explain what historically was going on with the war, at home, in other countries, etc.
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I felt some of it got really long. They truly did not leave out a detail, but at times it drove me nuts---especially the sharks!
