“Dignity is as essential to human life as water, food, and oxygen. The stubborn retention of it, even in the face of extreme physical hardship, can hold a man's soul in his body long past the point at which the body should have surrendered it.”
A compelling story of survival and redemption about Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was a bombardier in the Pacific arena of WWII. His plane crashed and he and the pilot lasted for more than 40 days before drifting to the Marshall Islands, where they were taken prisoners by the Japanese. He then goes to a succession of three different POW camps, each one worse than the last; in the last two, he is extensively abused by a Schindler's List-esque guard who singles him out. When I was reading this, there were so many times when I thought it couldn't get worse for Zamperini - and I was wrong. Since most of the WWII/Holocaust books I've read have been in Europe, I really had no idea of what the war was like with Japan and the inhumane and terrible way they treated their POWs, and I am grateful I had a chance to gain some insight and appreciation for what the Pacific soldiers went through.
The tale winds through Zamperini's life, starting as a toddler and finishing where he is today. His journey as an athlete, a soldier, a POW, and a veteran is one worth reading and remembering. Hillenbrand is a thorough researcher and an excellent writer, and like I said, the story is so compelling you can't stop reading.

Could not imagine living through this amount of torment and torture. I can see why a movie was made! This mans determination to survive was amazing. Great writing!
Fantastic book! Although written about real-life events, the book is written in a way that still feels like a story and isn't bogged down by 'facts'. Very eye opening about Japanese POW camps, and the hardships of war, even after war has ended.
Riveting, educational and, yet, an easy read. Just a great book.
This is unarguably the most devastating book I have ever read. At times I was filled with disgust and sadness and other times I was completely moved by Louis' ethereal experiences. Thank God for a redemptive ending to this REAL LIFE story.
I love this author's writing. And the fact that she is so ill while putting out this prose is just astonishing.
Somehow she uses just enough detail to keep you sucked in the story. These details can be silly little things or horrifying facts about the POW camps.

While Unbroken was an inspirational and very well-researched story, for me it was a very difficult book to listen to. I liked the parts about the life of Louis Zamperini, but I did not like the war parts, specifically Louie's treatment as a POW. The brutality was unbearable.
