Very decent paranormal specimen - loved the style of writing, the world-building, most of the characters, but Ava was irritating in many situations,
so - one star minus.

Holy crap. This book. This is my first Lish McBride book and I think it is safe to say that I will be reading more by her soon. Firebug is both action filled and packed with humor. The urban fantasy junkie in me ate this right up.

Ava is what is called a firebug, she can start fires with her mind. A rare talent that makes her valuable to the Coterie, the magical mafia. Firebug started off slow, introducing you to the characters and setting, but it was no less entertaining. Ava is a hit man (woman?) to the Coterie and when she is assigned to kill Duncan, a family friend and refuses things are about to get bad. Venus is on the hunt for her, kidnapping Cade, the closest thing she has to a father and threatening the ones she loves most.

McBride had an awesome mix of characters, Ava a Firebug, Ezra a were-fox and Lock who is something that involves nature. They are literally friend goals. They were so comfortable and cool With each other, they joked around and teased each other. But when it came down to it they had each others backs. That was my favorite part of this book was their friendship. Ava and Lock act like an old married couple, and Ezra is their kid. It is comical. I totally ship Ava and Lock, I really hope to see them together in the next book.

Ava was kick ass. I would want her as a best friend. Her job is to go around and kill magical creatures that Venus is not happy with, and Ava has no choice but to go along with it unless she wants to die. Venus pretty much thought that she had Ava wrapped around her finger until Ava flat out told her no, that she wasn't going to kill Duncan. Ava is sassy and a bit of a smart ass but in the end she is dedicated to the people she loves.

Overall, I really enjoy Firebug, it did get slow in parts but the humor and action makes up for it in the end. I am really eager for book two which isn't coming out until 2016. (Which seems like a really long time away) This will defiantly be a book I will be pushing at people!

Overall this book was good, just good. The middle part was honestly the best part but the ending kinda pissed me off

Eh. I kinda liked it at first but I quickly became bored. The plot seemed like it was stretched thin and the author decided to remedy this by adding in pointless details and annoying flashbacks. The fight scenes weren't captivating at all, and the characters weren't enough to keep me interested. The only one I liked was Ezra, but despite him being one of the main characters, he seems like nothing more than an afterthought. I started skimming about 60% in the book and kept skimming right up to the end. I did, however, read the last page because I don't consider a book to be fully read if I don't.

Not the best writing I've encountered but an entertaining story nonetheless. The supporting characters were all intriguing in their own right so I look forward to what comes next.

I was very excited for this book. And I will say it was not as amazing as her previous one, but it was still definitely enjoyable.

McBride has a certain flair, a creativity that she puts into her world, that adds its own element of fun. Her writing style is nice, a little simple, but easy to read. Her story is a little slow, but definitely interesting and leading to the climax.

I liked Ava. She’s a firebug, still getting control of her powers but mostly there. Having lived on the run before her mother died, now she lives with Cade, a father-figure, and working for the Coterie, the supernatural group her mother was running from. She works with Ezra and Lock for the Coterie, two other supernaturals. Ezra is fun, and a bit adorable; Lock is more serious, more protective, but also just as fun. The dynamic between the three was probably my favorite—they get along so well, and the budding romance was very underplayed, although the mess-up at the end was frustrating.

The father-daughter relationship between Ava and Cade was also really nice, and the development there at the end of the book has me really happy and excited to see more in the next book.

The Coterie was in a new place at the end of the book, and I’m interested to see where it goes next. It could be good, but something is surely going to go wrong.

This was a very nice book, a little slow, but enjoyable. McBride is already on my auto-buy list, so I look forward to her next book. I also do hope that this series intertwines with her Necromancer series, although I doubt it will, sadly. Maybe I just miss that group, though.

Lish McBride is the perfect escape for me. I love her weaving of magical creatures/characters of all types into her plots. She keeps the YA tame - sexually charged but no actual sex. There's a bit of cussing but mostly it's pop culture references and snark. And lots of awesome characters and half-humans: weres, golems, pyrokinetic teens, vampires and ones I've never heard of (she made up?) like caulbearers.
My only criticism is that there are no twists. I'm always expecting a best friend character to turn traitor. After reading three of her books, and having zero twists, I'm thinking it's unlikely to happen for some reason. That's fine.
If you like any of these things I've just mentioned, pick up a McBride!! Any will do. :)

I had this book in my to be read list for ages but I just put it off - I thought the name and cover were a little eh.

However, this book is very much a don't judge a book by it's cover book.

It was funny and full of action.

Even though Ava could be really annoying, I liked how people just put her in her place pretty fast which rearely happens to lead characters.

Lock is a male lead as he's not the normal broody type but a really mother hen type character.

Ava, Lock's and Ezra's friendship is one of the best bits about this book.

I tried. I don't know.. Maybe it's me. The blurb and that cover lured me in. I thought this is it. This is the book that I've been waiting for. Sadly, it's not. I think it's the main protagonist. She's so boring. I feel like a robot reading this. Anyway, I'll check the other books of the author!
