I love this book as much as I loved Lily Chu’s first two books. I know I thoroughly enjoy the books because I actually want to do chores so I can use the time to listen along and immerse myself in the worlds Chu created in her stories. I am flabbergasted at how flawlessly Chu dives into the setting and characters of each book. So far, all of the female leads have been so strong and also so well-defined. I feel like Chu’s picture-painting is superb and I actually know each of her protagonists and know what it feels like to be in their shoes. I also am just amazed at how innovative each plot is. THE TAKEDOWN is fun and quirky and witty and smart. Dee is a loyalist and a woman who stands for what she thinks is right. She’s fighting against the cheery disposition her mother has taught her to hold and learning to embrace her feelings. I loved that aspect of her character. Even more than that though, I loved loved loved her nerdiness. The concept of Questy and also of clothing made to grow with you through the seasons of your life — I wish these things were real so I can partake. Fun and substantive, that’s how I would consider Chu’s novels.

This one was okay. I think Pippa Soo as the narrator is my favorite part. The characters were sweet but not totally compelling/did not feel fully developed to me. I found myself keep waiting for more to happen and just felt as if the plot fell a bit flat to me.
