These people are terrible. And like, it’s not feminist for your female protagonist to be a jerk and not apologize. She didn’t grow—he had to do ALL the growing and apologizing and legit it wasn’t all his fault.

This showed up as a recommended read based on some other books I read, and this one was not for me. It was an interesting idea, I guess, but the story felt tedious, the characters frustrating. I almost did not finish (which is unusual for me).

Right off the bat I thought I’d really like the main couple, the banter, all that. I immediately noticed that Violet most likely has adhd and that probably sucked in that era. But I loved how that’s what James loved about her.

But then the repeated faking back and forth games got old real quick for me and I was wondering when and how they’d finally get together and fix their marriage. 4 years?! Really?! I guess they were young and all, but still.

I liked it but it could’ve been better with less back and forth.

A very fun start to a series I have immediately fallen in love with. It's so fun when a series like this starts and I know I have more character's stories coming along soon to enjoy. Water's has crafted a fun lighthearted regency romcom that's  fun and emotional and just the right amount of silly. I adore regency women up to shenanigans and this has that and more.

Martha Waters is the librarian at my library! I was so happy to read her first novel. I loved being transported to James & Violets world for a little while.
