The plot points in this book are literally so ridiculous that they're unbelievable, and the entire plot hinges on not even miscommunication, but a refusal to communicate, which is somehow worse. The best part of this book is its side characters who regularly provide laugh-worthy moments. I would much rather read about them than whatever faux-feminist thing Violet has going on (and I very well might someday) But I will give this some credit and say that the romance, once it was gotten to after way longer than makes sense will make you swoon and overall, the book and its dialogue manages to read like the time period it's going for. I didn't hate it, actually. It was just poor pacing and the wrong combo of tropes for me.
2.5 stars. I really enjoyed the premise/start but deeply annoyed by the miscommunication trope. Feels like this could have been a novella instead if the characters just talked to one another.
this book is so fucking funny and the main couple was so fun to read about so thank u martha waters
Overall a fun read. I enjoyed the will they won’t they theme of the book. The main characters already being married was a new take on that for me and I thought that seemed to up the stakes a little bit (in a good way).
At times Violet and Audley were maddeningly stubborn but that made the overall experience more enjoyable. Because I couldn’t decide if I wanted them to end up together. But in the end both of the characters had great growth and that made for a satisfying read.
The characters are complex and well written with lots of fun dialogue. If you enjoy books like A League of Extraordinary Women or any modern “romcom” book you will love this book!

Victorian romantic comedy. Heartwarming and full of laughs.
Entertaining and witty. Martha Waters as written an engaging laugh out loud historical romcom. Lately I’ve been all about the romcom and this one had the unique twist of also being a regency romance. Lord James and Lady Violet are in an unhappy marriage that they cannot get out of. When the couple met there was such a spark between them, but they have not spoken a word to one another for the past two years. When Violet receives news that James has been thrown from a horse she rushes to his side, just to find out that he is just fine. Violet is livid and this sets off a chain of trickery and mind games between the couple. Fake illnesses and phony mistresses. Would this couple ever find their way back to one another?
Violet and James were simultaneously enchanting and insufferable. The banter between them was both humorous and tedious. I liked James and Violet and could see that they were meant for each other they were both very selfish, entitled, and immature. At some point I was so frustrated with them and I didn’t even know what it was that tore these two apart in the first place. One of my only complaints with this book was I would’ve probably appreciated knowing what the conflict was a little earlier in the story. But in spite of that this really was a story filled with laughs and Whimzy.
