Literally phenomenal. The character and plot developments are effortlessly interwoven, and Powers' exceptionally strong writing style is a joy. The novel is 625 pages, which looks overwhelming, but the second you pick it up you will be enraptured. Although the 'Roots' section, with 8 straight introductions, may appear tedious, Powers' creates all of them in such detail that it does not become boring, and he slowly interconnects them all: in this way, the characters become the trees Powers seeks to give voice to.
Minor: Adult/minor relationship
The implied relationship between Olivia Vandergriff and Nick Hoel has perhaps a slight too big of an age gap to be truly comfortable.
