Kurslitteratur.

Hated everyone, the only reason it’s got 2 stars is because of the sheer volume of quotable lines.
Well -written, what I believe would have been truly called a “French Novel” at the time, and yet I have no desire to ever read it again.

Prettily written, depressing, and extremely realistic. There are not many books with a character that you get to know so well and who feels so real as Emma. She is not even particularly likeable, and yet I really felt for her. In a way, she was very admirable. She was able to recognize the meaninglessness of her own life, but, when given the opportunity, she strove to live as voluptuously as possible. Her ambition is admirable but is probably the most important factor in making her unlikeable.

Very slow. Might be better in the original French. The people I felt most for were Charles ad Berthe.
