Touched by an Alien

I am still in shock over how much I adored this book. I started reading and I was hooked, no doubt about it. I love Kitty's personality, snarkiness, and family. They are all so amazingly written. Ok, now I will try to articulate the awesomeness.

The characters in this story know exactly what they are about. They know what they want, where they are going, and who their enemy is. I admire that in a character. They all are also so snarky and sarcastic, including Kitty's parents and I love snarky sarcastic people too. Not to mention everyone is smart and sexy. The emotions the characters felt also felt real for me as a reader. The anger and sadness Kitty felt over Cox, I felt too, even though I didn't know him either. The bad guys, oh, the bad guys, are vile...my opinion on the aliens as a whole was that the author made their evilness portrayed on the outside, they were ugly because they were evil and all the gorgeous aliens were great people on the inside so they were beautiful on the outside.

The plot moves fast...there was not waiting around for anything. It was like "oh look, a bad guy", "oh look, a bad guy" and then it rinsed and repeated. I loved everything, there was so much action and so many smart moves in order to get rid of the bad guys. I adored this book so much, now I want to cry while I wait for the next because it doesn't come out until December.

I also think I should say I dislike science fiction. I don't aliens and spaceships and all that stuff, I just don't like reading it, BUT, this book blew me away. Simply amazing!

Probably a 2.5 here. In some ways I really enjoyed this book. I really did. The first fifty pages or so were pretty great, in a giggle out loud and have people look at you kind of way. There were spots like this through the whole book.

I could even live with the instant lust in which the main character falls into (with more than one character). I could almost buy how she had everything figured out about the entire species in oh, a day, day and a half.

Where it really lost me was at the slut-shaming. By the protagonist, on herself, no less. Slut slut slut, she said. Okay, yeah, I am not the sort of person to sleep with someone that fast, but hey, if you like it, whatever. But wow, do we run "sluts" down the road, and frankly, it disgusted me to see a woman do this to herself like that. A woman author with a female protagonist, even! Just, wow.

But I kept reading. Plot was so so, and I wanted to see how it ended.

And then there was a sex scene that disturbed me a bit. I get possessiveness, I do, but using sex to force a person to say they love them, for it to be like that... there was a disturbing edge that while it didn't go over any lines, I feel it toed it a little too much for comfort, just like the slut shaming.

So while I did enjoy the humor of the book, and might even read the next one if I can find it used, I had some major issues with this book. Maybe they'll be worked out in the next book, but it seems to be a trend..

I should've loved this book. I WANTED to love this book but, sadly, I just didn't. This book is basically in the same vein as the movie, Men In Black, in terms of how over the top it is. And that's fine because that's what the author is going for. The heroine even makes several MIB jokes so it's clear that the book doesn't take itself seriously. Which is yet another reason why I should've loved this book. I loved the first MIB movie so this book was supposed to be a slam dunk for me and yet...I had issues, a few in fact.

- The heroine, Katherine 'Kitty' Katt (yes, her name is Kitty Katt) is a total Mary Sue. Apparently there are these beings from a much more evolved culture that have been addressing the problems posed by some big bad aliens for decades but Kitty comes along and, in two days flat, she's solving things that no one else has ever been able to.
- Jeff Martini, the love interest who never quits. Jeff meets Kitty early on and at first his flirty comments and sexual innuendos were fun and charming. By chapter three I was wondering if he had an off switch. He didn't.
- No one had an off switch. Every single character in this book had the exact same, snarky attitude and it. Never. Stopped. In a shorter book maybe this wouldn't have mattered so much but since I felt that this book meandered about a 100 pages too long, it mattered.
- No more girlfriends, please. There is a former male-model-turned-secret-agent who happens to be gay. I don't think he had one line in the whole book that didn't incorporate the word "girlfriend" into it.
- Romance, schmomance. I love a nice, slow burn with my fictional couples. Jeff and Kitty? They're not familiar with the concept. They know each other for a whopping two days before they're angsting over their relationship and are declaring love just a couple of days later (the whole book spans a week). It's not terrible, I just didn't buy into it and nor did I care. Oh, and they start calling each other "baby", which is just a personal pet peeve of mine.

I'd give this about two and a half stars overall. I was primed to love it and am sad that I didn't. At this point, I have no plans to read further into the series.

I met the author at an event at SDCC and she was super nice, so I'm glad this held up as a cute, fun, and silly bit of brain candy. I imagine later books must have better plotting, since this one spent a lot of time with characters sitting around in various cars, offices, and research centers having "witty" conversations and giving out exposition in drips and drabs. I also rolled my eyes a bit at the author's insistence on being... cutesy, maybe? Reader's constant "girlfriend!" and the weird phrasing of "making love", for instance. But the characters are sympathetic and entertaining, if fluffy, and I had a good time!

Prior to this book, the only Alien novel I can recall reading was The Host. I was a little nervous that I might not like this series because of my lack of experience in this particular area of the paranormal. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. I was drawn in from the first page and my first night of reading I could not put the book down, to the point of staying up until 3 a.m. reading! The story is pretty much action from page one and it never dies down. You're kept on the edge of your seat and anxious to know what's going to happen next. Add to that the quirky wittiness of the main character Kitty, and a brewing romance and love triangle and you've got yourself a hit! So, if you think a battle between good and evil aliens, a love triangle, and a witty and very intelligent female protagonist sound right for you, then please read this book!

I enjoyed a lot about this book but it tanked in stars for two reasons. number one - JUST SAY NO TO INSTALOVE. Number two
so...sexual assault is a grand basis for friendship then? I mean the author played it off but that's...He was forcing his attentions on her and trying to rip her clothes off. she'd been fucking his cousin how did this seem reasonable. the author tried to play it off like she thought it was so hot at moments? Kinda? Ish? but there was zero consent, in fact there was the opposite of consent.
I've almost talked myself into lower stars the more I think about this.

This is light-hearted, silly, ridiculous, kind of like a comic book. And so entertaining. This was another book I picked up for the hell of it and I'm glad I did. The story follows Kitty Katt. The ridiculous doesn't end there. I don't know what marketing manager training is like but Kitty goes from accidentally killing a monster with a pen and discovering there are aliens living on Earth to
A WEEK LATER being a commander of airborne division
. She's able to outthink and out strategize humans, aliens and monsters alike, all while having no idea what's going on. Suspension of disbelief aside, I found myself laughing quite a bit. I'm going to read the next one too.

How bizarre. I know I read the first few (three? four? five?!) books in this series a few years ago, but I didn't have even this first one marked as "read." Did I read them before I joined Goodreads? (So while I was still living in Seattle?) I would have sworn I'd read them since moving to Tucson - and since joining Goodreads - but my memory and a sense of time are only passing acquaintances, so who knows?

I don't often NOT finish a book....I can't honestly think of one right now, besides this one. So bad. Just, bad. I tried, I tried so hard. I thought it would be funny and entertaining, maybe along the lines of the Ester Diamond serious by Laura Resnik. But it fell so so short. Quit reading halfway through, just lost all interest. I don't even feel like putting any more effort into this review. If you genuinely liked the twilight books....chances are you will probably like this one too.

Part One

I'm going to pretend I'm the author [a:Gini Koch|3219496|Gini Koch|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1275081028p2/3219496.jpg] and here's my brainstorming process for the K. Katt series:

How do I get a superhero, hunky boyfriend that's a god in bed and it's okay?

Who wants fugly aliens? Not me!

MY aliens are going to be hot hot HOT! Doesn't matter which gender. They're gonna be beautiful with a capital B!

Not only are they going to rock it on the physical plane, they're going to be smart, compassionate and totally attracted to brains and personality. When everyone looks good, who cares about looks? Right? RIGHT!

Can't have a boring story. Hmmmmm... how am I going to spice it up? Not a lot of conflict with a bunch of nice guys and gals.

OH! I know! Let's add a kickass heroine! Let's have fun with this...

A-HAH! I have it: Katherine "Kitty" Katt ~ Unlikely heroine, spunky, non-linear thinking, tomboy extraordinaire who can dress nice if need be and one that's genetically inclined to take chances to save others.

Good Aliens vs Bad Aliens

Bad guys, bad men, bad things, bad monsters, bad aliens, I hate snakes, slime is nasty. Who likes bat wings--nobody! Ugh! Huge ears are a nightmare! *shudder* Gray is neutral and safe. Classy waiters dress in white and black. It's standard. Suits. Aramani? Gucci? Asian tailored made to go? Polo? Nah, too golf. No golf boys. Cabana boys! Wait--that's a different story. OR maybe a substory-dream-fantasy-nightmare? Note for later...

Gotta have a few twists. Love triangle? Huh? Love? Who needs insta-crush? TOTALLY unbelievable. Well but if he's a nice guy--oh yeah! Who's gonna be Mr. Hunk? I mean, main squeeze. Er *scratches stuff out* I mean God in Bed! Yeah! That's a great title! No one needs to know this part... Mwahahahah~

Part Two

The triple K series is about a quirky, forthright female who is blessed and cursed with the right genetics that lead her to be extraordinary in crazy situations. Meet Katherine "Kitty" Katt, the lead of triple K. I don't know about you but I may have to kill my parents if they landed me with a name like that! It's like asking to be punked immediately by all snark contenders and those who love to spout bad jokes and puns.

Right from the get go, Kitty jumps into the fray when she witnesses a man transforming into a monster and causing massive damage and death. Without thinking too hard, she runs in and wacks the fugly with a pen. Everyone knows that all writing tools can become deadly objects of death. Straight away, Kitty is taken in by a group of drool worthy men in official attire and whisked away to classified destinations. There ends the life Kitty has always known to be true and thus begins a new phase that totally rearranges her worldview. Nothing will ever be the same but that's okay because it's definitely become much more interesting!

Let's meet some of the characters:

Sol: Kitty's Dad is super eco-friendly, a professor, smart, devoted husband and totally growly Pop to all potential boyfriends of his only daughter.

Angela: If you want to know where Kitty's crazy comes from, you're at the right place. It may be safe to say her mom's genes are a bit more dominant in the mix. She's super mom! Not to spoil anything but she can shoot like a pro. You'll find out why. Most of it is classified.

Reader: An ex-cover model that's become a part of the secret group to defend earth against invaders. He quickly becomes a friend that Kitty can count on.

Martini: One of the leaders of Alpha Centauri, strong empath and contender for Kitty's heart. It's a standard for Martini to ask Kitty for her hand in marriage. You'll see. =P

Christopher: Martini's best friend, cousin, one of the strongest imagers, another leader of Alpha Centauri and a royal pain in Kitty's delicate behind. Why? Read the story to find out!

This book was chosen to be the Book of the Month for Girls, Guns, & Grimoires. I've never heard of this series before and this is the first book by Gini Koch that I've read. It's a great book! I had a ton of fun reading the story and really enjoyed the characters, plot, snappy dialogue, action and the plot twists. It's hard to pull the wool over my eyes. I enjoy it immensely when a story can surprise me or have me involved enough that I don't foretell everything that's going to happen.

I now have a new book on my list of favorites and a new author to hunt down and explore! Yay! I'm eager to see what else is in store for Kitty and the gang.
