Sweet George. As an adult writing the story he recognized he didn’t realize all of what was happening as his family was forced to live in internment camps for years. I love the strength of his parents, willing to stand up for democracy, for their rights, in non violent ways and set the example for their kids. And especially for the hard talks George had with his Dad. I want to have those hard discussions with my kids. I want to help them to think.

Interesting all the dark sides of history (and the present) this country tries to hide. In school we always had the Holocaust shoved down our throats; never mind that there were prison camps in this own damn country. *huff* I've heard that the older some people get, the more conservative they become. I just get older and more pissed off that everyone is stupid and rude. You can be stupid and nice but jfc stop being stupid and rude.

A straightforward account of Takei’s experience in the Japanese American Internment Camps in the 1940s. It is all the more awful because of the frankness of the account.
The best part is how he accounts for the difference between his childhood memories and the painful anguish of his father’s experience. Memory is not infallible, and as a child in the camps Takei did not always understand the implications of what was happening. That understanding came later, and he did a nice job at showing how he had to work through blaming his dad before he fully appreciated the reality of the situation.
The book also did a great job at contextualizing Takei’s experiences with the politics of the time and adding connections to what is happening in the world today. It really hits home how stereotypes and fear are a toxic combination that leads to selfishness and cruelty.
An account that should be common knowledge.

Un valioso testimoni sobre el encarcelamiento de los estadounidenses de ascendencia japonesa en E.U. durantenla II Guerra Mundial. El mensaje final se siente patriótico y no concuerdo mucho con ello.
