I'm not usually a big fan of graphic novels. But in this case the visual format makes things a lot more real for the part of the story remembered from the viewpoint of a child, who probably couldn't have articulated the situation and feelings at the time.
I went to a comic convention back in July and George Takei was there. In his panel he talked about this book and I've been wanting to read it ever since.
The story was one of those poignant, moving pieces of history that isn't talked about. I can't even count the number of times it made me cry. Seeing all of it both from the childish memories and the adult perspective was so good. George's young innocence is a testament to how hard his parents worked to make the journey feel less scary for him and his siblings, how much they sacrificed for their families. It is a sad showing of just how little we've learned as a country, but it also has a strong sense of hope in the voices of people.
This is absolutely something that needs to be read by everyone. I hope that it isn't dismissed just because it's in graphic novel form. In fact, I hope that it makes the story feel more accessible to young and reluctant readers, and I hope adults also read it. We need to learn from our past.
