I was aware George Takei is an activist, but I had no idea everything he's been through and the specific work he's done. I'm sad to see the same things happening in the US yet again, with people of color being locked up or sent away for no reason at all. We should be ashamed.

Super disheartening that this ugly part of America's history isn't covered in history classes more often. George Takei's book gives you a stark glimpse at it--everything from how he didn't understand the full gravity of the situation while his parents did, the racism apparent in those who were tasked with running the internment camps (I mean, obviously, but it's still sickening to see it), and how America was so quick to assume that a population of people who were only trying to survive in a brand new country were the enemy. Very profound book that raises a lot of questions, especially in today's political climate. Highly recommended.

I’ve always known about the Japanese internment camps but not the details. I had no idea the amount of laws the racist government officials made to try to justify their actions, and how those laws are still negatively affecting us today. Thank you George for your many years of activism!

I truly feel that there are some histories you have to hear from someone's firsthand experience. George Takei's childhood spent in Japanese American internment camps is one of those histories. The pictures in this graphic novel are beautiful and often heart wrenching. His story is marvelously told and the experience of Japanese Americans in WW2 is so gracefully told. At the end of the novel, he connects his own experiences to those of Muslim Americans and Mexican Americans, and immigrants, in such a beautiful and heartbreaking way. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes history, WW2 stories, or just amazingly done graphic novels.
