I loved this more than I expected. His perspective as a child in the internment camps was something I really appreciated because of it's honesty and vulnerability. I knew some of this history but not all of it and the way he told it was so well done that I want to read even more on the subject.

Likes:
- I’m really glad he decided to make this a graphic novel memoir cuz the pictures really add to it in so many ways
- The artist is soo freaking talented
- The art is like poetry, the way she crafts the images show so much underneath it all
- I like how it’s not just solely focused on his experience but also on the context/history surrounding/causing his imprisonment

Random thoughts:
- I read this through my library so I will definitely be buying own copy
- I definitely see sooo many similarities/parallels to what’s happening now
- I definitely recommend also watching his Ted talk along with reading this
- Also, this is probably very very obvious but it such an IMPORTANT read (as most banned books are, cuz yes this is a banned book 🙄🙄🙄)
- I’m so glad that this is considered a YA book
- I knew most of this stuff/history but there definitely some things I did not know happened like the bill that was passed for Japanese Americans to give up their citizenship (WTF?!?!) for example, just another reason why this book is soo soo soo important
- It’s medium to fast paced
