Okay this was pretty good considering it made me sad so many times. Everytime something happened to Poe and Katsa I was wiped out
Decent YA fantasy, but not appropriate for my teens due to a couple of sex scenes. The scenes are not graphic, but still inappropriate for the intended audience. Would have been fantastic for them otherwise! I plan to read the next book in the series.
This definitely falls into a lot of tropes but I found myself liking it regardless. Although the protagonist acts in much the same way every other YA female lead does, she does have some character growth and sense. The pacing was a bit off and the ending was anticlimactic but for a YA novel this wasn't bad.

the love that i have for this book is so pure and inexplicably immense. i had read it back in 2018, but had forgotten almost everything about it. the things that i DID remember were very hazy in my memory, and included the names of several characters such as po (aka the best book boyfriend ever). i had a deep connection with nearly all of the characters. i could not choose between po, bitterblue and katsa if my life depended on it. overall, this book made me feel so warm and safe. i needed that.
there were a certain 30 pages of this book in which katsa and bitterblue were in the mountains and struggling to survive, and i honestly think those 30 pages were my favorite. it was so interesting to see katsa being so resourceful and managing to keep both of them alive at the end.
i don't have very many thoughts, other than the ones that i've already said and that this whole experience was the absolute best :) i'm glad i picked it up when i did.

❝ a monster that refused, sometimes, to behave like a monster. when a monster stopped behaving like a monster, did it stop being a monster? ❞

Almost a five star. I really liked it, but it took me days to read. I like the feel of fantasy in this story without pulling in wizards, elves, and dragons. I've got the next one in the series on hold at the library.
This was a fantastic start to the series! Katsa’s story is so riveting right from the beginning that I found it hard to stop reading. She was easy to relate to even though she had a completely different perception on life than I do the author did an amazing job of having me know exactly where she was coming from. I loved Po’s attitude and even though I couldn’t see his eyes for real I was ensnared by them all the same. His personality and joy shown through the narrative and captured my heart. My absolutely favorite character in this book had to be Bitterblue. For such a young kid she was extremely perceptive and knew exactly what was going on around her. I am extremely excited to continue on to the next book and find what other amazing characters await.
