Holds up rereading 15 years later, but part of the fifth star might just be nostalgia. Such an important book for little teenage me.

I really enjoyed this book even though a lot about it irritated me. The sentences seemed to be awkwardly strung together, redundant, repetitive...but overall the story was great, just wish the writing was better. I will read the other two in the series and do recommend this book.

Just didn't care for the main character.  She kept making annoyingly bad decisions and just seemed very immature.

DID NOT FINISH: 21%

The writing style is juvenile and childish, the worldbuilding is quite bad, the names of kingdoms and people's names were so uninspired and ridiculous, there is nothing original about this story, it has been done over and over again and there are just so many ways this could go, I don't like the characters, Randa and Katsa, in particular, are one dimensional and plain bad. Randa is a ridiculous villain and Katsa is the type of fmc is doesn't need a man, but ends up with one and is stubborn just for the sake of being stubborn, also she is very irritating. However, the aspect that made me really hate this novel is the fact that there is a lot of telling and not showing. The author tells us how powerful, kind and smart Katsa is, but doesn't prove this. Worse they show us the opposite because she makes beginner's mistakes and even though she should have control over her actions and emotions she doesn't and acts like a little child. Also there are some events that I simply cannot believe like Katsa at 8 beating multiple men in full armor at the same time and the whole existence of the secret council. Another thing that I don't like about Katsa is how poorly she treats the horses.
