I love the writing but it's quite hard to follow. It's like we're following her train of thought so one second we're in the present, then we're reminiscing and then we're back again. Hard to keep up.

I genuinely disliked most things about this book. I hated the main character and everything she thought or did. I've hated characters in the past, but they've always had some redeeming quality, been well-written, or at least made sense. Not so here. I give this one 1.5 stars. The .5 is because the ending made sense and fit in well with what I thought the character would do.

This was awful! After every page I turned, I couldn't believe the shockingly awful decisions the character KEPT making. Avoid this one at all costs

If you like a messed up book. This is the one. Wow. Just wow. I enjoyed this book.

I seen reviews with people saying they hate it because it's not like the lovely bones. Well it's not suppose to be because it's a different book. Don't let that stop you from trying this story.

It's definitely fucked up but it's a relief to NOT read another book with a happy ending.

I understand why this was critically panned. Mediocre structure, typically unlikeable protagonist. I almost quit when she brought her mother down to the basement because I thought it was so unbelievably stupid. I wish it had been better because it had the makings of a very good novel.

  • "When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily. Dementia, as it descends, has a way of revealing the core of the person affected by it. My mother’s core was rotten like the brackish water at the bottom of a weeks-old vase of flowers. She had been beautiful when my father met her and still capable of love when I became their late-in-life child, but by the time she
gazed up at me that day, none of this mattered."

Almost worth reading.

But not. I adored Alice Sebold's first two novels, the Lovely Bones which I may have read in one sitting and then Lucky her personal memoire which gives you some insight into how she could possible capture the emotion she did in the lovely bones.

First I thought the premise was a little strange but I was willing to give it a try. I just couldn't get into this book. I didn't realize sympathize with the main character which made reading about her plight all that much more difficult. For me, this book is a pass.
