I knew I should have put this off till there was more word on the third book. Now I am going to be hung up on this till it comes out 🥲

While I do think a good chunk could have been cut out of the first part of the book, the entirety of part 2 made up for it. Some subplots did come across as kind of pointless, but they didn’t take away from the main story enough for me to see them as a huge negative. Overall this was much more focused and action filled than the first and I cannot wait for the next one!

picked this up while on holiday after finishing the only book i’d brought with me, and thought i better give it a go as i loved ninth house - i did not however realise it had been three years since i read ninth house and i couldn’t remember anything that happened in it.

i loved all of the characters and i enjoyed the plot, especially the heist aspect and the heightened threats. i did find the plot rather slow paced, and i’m not sure how i feel about the greater focus on the magic aspect, i quite enjoyed the first book for the secrecy of the magic, but i look forward to seeing where this goes.

Enjoyed: worldbuilding, magic system, Tripp and Tanner, some fun plot things, literary references, investigation of social role of magic/privilege

Mild annoyances: Alex could have more character growth. Also, sometimes she seems like a cliche alt girl (this party was so boring, dress with combat boots). Alex and Darlington need to get over it and get under each other. Very compressed timeline- events take place within about a month. Lack of involvement of other houses, which was prominent in the previous book.
