I don’t think this is an adult novel, reads very YA
The main character is so immature it's irritating. And even at a third of the way through there didn't seem to be anything interesting happening.
Anything goes when you’re a fox spirit/vampire hybrid in 1930s Shanghai…
Shanghai Immortal by A. Y. Chao is a fantasy romance set during the jazz age about two world…the immortal and immortal…
Jing’s mother was a hulijing fox spirit and her father was a (possibly European) vampire…but she’s grown up her nearly hundred years as the ward of the king of hell.
IImmortal Shanghai (also known as yin Shanghai, the Dark City, and other names) is the supernatural reflection of mortal Shanghai, where creatures of heaven hell and beyond mingle…and travel between realms.
Jing is rambunctious…and ambitious…so the opportunity to serve as bodyguard to a visiting mortal businessman (and finally get the chance to travel to mortal Shanghai) might finally help her achieve her goals.
I liked the lore and the rampant use of various Chinese myths and figures throughout…as it really fleshed out both the immortal and mortal versions of Shanghai in the year 1935.
Also, I gotta give them credit for creative use of the vampire aversion to running water.
I look forward to seeing what they do with later volumes in this series…

Unfortunately I couldn’t get into the writing style whatsoever. It is overly descriptive, for my taste.
I feel as though I would have enjoyed the story and characters as well as the world, but it’s pages upon pages of description.
I may come back to this at a later time, but I’m not sure.
