Found the main character insufferable, didn’t like the fact a Chinese word was dumped in every 3 words with no definition or context. Found the 1st person view and humour irritating. First book i’ve ever DNFed

I struggled pretty hard with the beginning 60 or so pages, from Lady Jing's angry woe-is-me attitude toward literally everything and everyone, to the weariness of another seemingly young adult coming-of-age story masked as an adult novel. I will admit, I did not enjoy those first 60 pages. However, the curiosity to know more of the mirrored Shanghai, and then ultimately the want and need to see how the friendship arc between Lady Jing, Mr. Lee, Lady Gi, and Ah Lang would be resolved won me over so hard.

Lady Jing's anger and immature attitude toward everything dulls evenly over the story, and though she's still sarcastic and a bit insulting by the end, you come to learn that her bitterness is pretty well-earned. She's still considered a child by most everyone, not only because of her attitude, but because in the realm of immortals, she is. I won't make excuses for some of the things she's done and is accused of, but she reminds me of Nesta from ACOTAR. There are some very traumatic events in both of their pasts and for both of them, anger and lashing out seems to be the only way to express their hurt. Both of their books are ultimately about finding alternate ways of healing and acknowledging their trauma.

I believe this is a pretty underrated book, especially because a lot of readers probably won't be able to see past Lady Jing's initial immaturity, but I greatly enjoyed this.

I really wanted to enjoy this but the main character was nearly 100 years old and said the word fart more than a 12 year old boy. The dialogue felt more middle grades than YA and the characters read very shallow. The overuse of fart and tatas really took away from the story.
