I'm sorry but no - didn't like the characters, didn't think the relationships or world were developed, didn't love the overuse of 'ta-tas' and I won't be reading the next book

I thought the whole world building was cool and the concept of the book too. Liked how you also learn a little bit about Chinese deities/demons. The plot was also quite interesting, although it was quite a long build up for not that much pay off. The main character, Lady Jing, is annoyed at Lady Soo for the whole book and constantly obsessed with the dragon pearl and whatever the Hulijing were up to. However, when the climax of the plot finally came it went by suuuper fast.
Like she was captured, escaped and got the dragon pearl, mastered it's powers, went back to the Hulijing court and got saved by higher deities in only a few pages.
The actual climax went by super fast, and quite easily for her
(especially as she didn't end up having to be clever or fight, she just got saved by her status within Hell and bc higher deities were like "oh let's help her". She didn't actually do much so the pay off wasn't really there. She learned to be sliiiiiightly more patient throughout the book, but didn't really have to use that).
Because it went by so fast you also didn't feel the emotional effects as much. The severity of the supposed situation didn't really transfer
Mr Lee almost died and was being sucked out, and I liked him as a character, but then I didn't feel that much when he was sucked dry. Like it didn't seem that dramatic.
So all in all, I think the latter half of the plot could have definitely been extended and explored a bit more, especially with transferring the emotion to the reader. Now it all resolved so quickly that it didn't feel satisfying. I think the book probably should've been around 100 pages longer. However, it was a bit of a page turner and I definitely enjoyed the storyline, although the main character was very immature at times.

I loved Lady Jing's character in this book as well as the complexity of this world. Lady Jing's character felt endearing even with and even because of her course exterior and behavior. She's supposed to act courtly in this world that treats her poorly but she won't have any of it. I also really loved the fact that she never called the love interest by his first name, so adorable! It's a bit strange to say that this felt like a comforting read but it did. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
