For starters, any book enjoyed by Xiran Jay Zhao automatically goes on my To Read List. I thoroughly enjoyed Lady Jing's character development. Speaking as someone who had a toxic upbringing, the chosen family element of the novel was very meaningful. The ending seemed abrupt initially - I thought there were a lot of loose ends. I thought this was a standalone novel, but after learning this book is the first installment of a trilogy, I am anxiously awaiting the sequel!

This took me two goes which I’m not proud of BUT when I properly got into it it was a really fast cute read. Like I’m not sure who this is FOR because god knows I’m the worlds biggest enjoyer of all things and even I didn’t enjoy it THAT much. I guess if you’re like 13 and think nudity is really funny? I’m 23 and I think nudity is funny though? I honestly couldn’t say but it was silly and that’s nice
