I adore Mindy. She is a relatable queen. Everything she said I’ve either thought before, heard before, or wish I had experienced. She’s super funny, charming, and a great writer. I liked this book so much I’ll probably read it again sometime.

If I were to share just one observation about Mindy Kaling’s memoir, it would be this:  there are a lot of lists.

Most celebrity memoirs I’ve read are filled with essays that lean more toward stories about their life.  They feel more biographical.  Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? had a little of that to be sure, but it was mostly at the beginning and it faded out quickly.  At the very beginning, she does address that this memoir is not going to be like Bossypants (though she says very nice things about Tina Fey and advises the reader to pick up another copy).

The comedy in Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is a bit darker than I generally prefer.  Also, written ten years ago, I feel some of the comedy is a bit … outdated?  It reminds me of the first season of The Office, which pushes the line between funny and cringe (which she defends staunchly, but the way – she loves the first season of The Office).  More than once, Kaling says “I know I’m not supposed to say this, but….”.  The comedy didn’t work for me the way I wanted it to?  But I think the people who enjoy Kaling’s comedy style will enjoy this book.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is probably the shortest memoir I’ve read.  Because of that, and because of the list-heavy format of the second half of the book, I’m struggling to write a thorough review.  I don’t think it’s the best memoir I’ve read – I felt like I learned very little about Kaling and maybe her other memories talk a little more about her life and career.  If you want a peek inside Kaling’s head, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is the way to do it.
