Very funny for most of it - but that's are definitely cringey parts and I need to remember that it was written in 2011. Lots has changed since then!

I don’t think this is a bad book, but it’s not what I expected it to be. I wanted more of the stories about her life and less of the other parts of this book, especially those in list format (I hated the list format she used and will now use it to describe what I did and didn’t like about her book)

Pros:
1. The stories of her friendships growing up.
2. The stories of her time on SNL.
3. The stories of her time on The Office.
4. The stories about her and her family.

Cons:
1. The list format she used.
2.  Her list on franchises she would reboot.
3. The chapter on why she hates roasts.
4. The chapter on her opinions of things in Hollywood.
5. The chapter on her opinions on hooking up and relationships in general.
6.  The chapter on Irish Exits.
7. The list of things that make her cry.
8. The chapter where she describes the guys she wants to date and opinions on men in general.
9. The list of her “revenge fantasies.”
10. The weird chapter about Jewish people.

Many of the things I didn’t like about the book I think would have been better if she used stories about her actual life to get to the point rather than just listing her opinions. Like I said I don’t hate this book, I just expected it to be different. Mindy is a talented comedy writer and it definitely shows in this book, but maybe this would have made a better stand-up routine than an actual book.

I adore Mindy. She is a relatable queen. Everything she said I’ve either thought before, heard before, or wish I had experienced. She’s super funny, charming, and a great writer. I liked this book so much I’ll probably read it again sometime.

I first read this book TEN years ago, in 2012, and at that point I had never seen The Office and only vaguely understood what SNL was.  we didn't watch TV, okay?  my best friend lent me this book and I took over a month to surreptitiously read it, for some reason embarrassed by what the title said about me or something.

on reread (coinciding with rewatching the better seasons of The Office after 5 years), which I listened to on audio, this book made me nostalgic (ish?) for kind of a horrible year in my life (eighth grade) in the way that only early 2010s pop culture can.  Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me really shows its age now, with some comments (let's just say this was very much pre-#metoo, I don't think The Cosby Show would warrant a mention by 2022 Mindy) that are kind of jarring to hear.  diet culture is overrepresented.

credit where credit is due -- she totally called the Ghostbusters remake.

so, as a Mindy Kaling fan, I must lower my rating from 4 stars to 3 simply because of how much less content was in this book than I remembered and the many ways in which this did not age well.

If I were to share just one observation about Mindy Kaling’s memoir, it would be this:  there are a lot of lists.

Most celebrity memoirs I’ve read are filled with essays that lean more toward stories about their life.  They feel more biographical.  Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? had a little of that to be sure, but it was mostly at the beginning and it faded out quickly.  At the very beginning, she does address that this memoir is not going to be like Bossypants (though she says very nice things about Tina Fey and advises the reader to pick up another copy).

The comedy in Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is a bit darker than I generally prefer.  Also, written ten years ago, I feel some of the comedy is a bit … outdated?  It reminds me of the first season of The Office, which pushes the line between funny and cringe (which she defends staunchly, but the way – she loves the first season of The Office).  More than once, Kaling says “I know I’m not supposed to say this, but….”.  The comedy didn’t work for me the way I wanted it to?  But I think the people who enjoy Kaling’s comedy style will enjoy this book.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is probably the shortest memoir I’ve read.  Because of that, and because of the list-heavy format of the second half of the book, I’m struggling to write a thorough review.  I don’t think it’s the best memoir I’ve read – I felt like I learned very little about Kaling and maybe her other memories talk a little more about her life and career.  If you want a peek inside Kaling’s head, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is the way to do it.
