In my opinion, a masterpiece. Incredibly well researched and planned by the author, The Martian stays true to real world physics and is absolutely the most realistic work science fiction that I have ever read. And not only is it true to reality, it is also incredibly thrilling and filled with action, of which I will not spoil, but I will say this: just when you think things couldn't get any worse, they do. Just when you think it's the current situation is impossible to solve, Weir proves you wrong.
I was absolutely fascinated just how much happened in this book. There was far more action and changes of plans than I expected, and each twist and turned made me more and more interested. The characters, especially our wonderful Martian King Mark Watney, are well fleshed out and fascinating. The amount of wit and humor is also very refreshing.
I honestly don't know what I can say about this book. It is my absolute favorite book I've read. There was so much action, so many problems, so many work arounds, so much humor, so much absolute insanity that I can't put it into words. This is a book that has to be experienced to understand, but you'll love every moment of it.
I have never seen the movie, so I can't speak to how closely it followed the book, but I am definitely excited to see how it stacks up.
