I can't wait for the movie I assume they are making of this book. It reminded me of the best Michael Crichton - full of interesting science but also great suspense - but it has better characterization. The main character is hilarious, even as he struggles with the greatest predicament the world has ever known. I listened to the audio book and it's very well done and a lot of fun. A great summer read.

I love the story behind the science in the story.

I loved all the writing styles that represented different situations. I thought it was put fourth very well through the medium of printed storytelling and also the medium of film.

I love the main character and everything about the book and the the things that were in the book not the movie and the things that were in the movie not the book. that's rare for me. I particularly like at the end of the movie the day 1 bit.

I don't doubt the problem solving skills of a regular person with dedication, I can only imagine what an astronaut is capable of. what an inspiring story! and it was so real.

This book wasn’t written for me. Too much science that I ended up skimming over and way too much snark and sarcasm for my taste. Lots of eye rolling with regards to dialogue from all the characters but in particular Mr. Too Cool for School Mark Watney and Frat Boy Poorly Trying to Impersonate a Professional Woman Annie

Quotes:

I might die, but damn it, someone will know what I had to say.

“What would an Apollo astronaut do?” He’d drink three whiskey sours, drive his Corvette to the launchpad, then fly to the moon in a command module smaller than my Rover. Man those guys were cool.

If a hiker gets lost in the mountains, people will coordinate a search. If a train crashes, people will line up to give blood. If an earthquake levels a city, people all over the world will send emergency supplies. This is so fundamentally human that it’s found in every culture without exception. Yes, there are assholes who just don’t care, but they’re massively outnumbered by the people who do. And because of that, I had billions of people on my side.
