For me this was a total mixed bag.

This spans from absolute shameless ridiculousness in the Rapunzel retelling featuring Gary as the titular heroine, to the classic Jack (aka Sam) and the beanstalk with so many warm fuzzy feels, to an odd bdsm Cinderella with Todd as the beleaguered hero, to ending with a tragic legendary tale of how Castle Lockes came to be.

Michael Lesley narrating only further elevates the storytelling, making this a win no matter what. Just be forewarned that this runs the entire gamut of emotions which affected my enjoyment factor most erratically, as is evident by my average score. Regardless, this is Klune, and you know he can bring the laughs as well as the tears!

This rating and review is only for the canon story, David's Dragon .

It was an extremely sad and dark story. It had love and friendship in the epicenter but it had a sense of doom and tragedy from the start to the end.

This book was…a lot. It was funny but mostly…it was a lot. I love TJ Klune, but I have no idea why I just finished this book.

The first story was my least favorite. They get progressively better from there. The first three are parodies of fairytales with characters from Verania.

The final story, David's Dragon, is sweet, heartbreaking, and beautiful and is relevant to actual Verania. It gives the history behind the constellation, David's Dragon and some history. It's a must read for those who love Tales from Verania.

Fun fact: when I rate a book, I compare it to how I felt reading the Tales From Verania series by T.J. Klune. Everyone needs a bit of Sam, Ryan, Gary and Tiggy in their life.

In Fairytales From Verania we see our beloved characters appear in fairy tale retellings in Klune’s signature style with mixed results. While I appreciate the direction Klune was taking with these stories, it just made me wish for more original stories to enjoy these characters further (I’m looking forward to reading The Damning Stone next year!).

Perhaps it was my mood, but I did not particularly enjoy reading The Unicorn in the Tower. Sam and the Beanstalk was slightly more enjoyable with Tiggy starring large, and The Good Boy more enoyable still. But ultimately the best part of this book, in my opinion, is David’s Dragon – the only canonical tale which brought me back to those feeling when reading the earlier books in the series.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and the last two tales saved the day and raised my rating to 4 stars.
