This book was an extremely slow start, I did struggle for the first 20% of the book however I believe that’s mainly due to the amount of political world building and lore.

The more I read, the harder it was to put down! I found myself falling in love with different characters throughout the books and remaining consistently hateful to the villains!

* enemies to lovers
* fated mates
* gods
* magic

This was the February book for my Illumicrate box.
This story had such a cool plotline that I was super interested in reading. Caging gods (dragons) inside humans to gain magical powers, fighting dictators, enemies to lovers?? Count me in on every regard.
However, this book was a letdown. It wasn't terrible, it just felt very flat and underdeveloped.
The characters were enjoyable, however each character had one characteristic about them that they referenced constantly throughout the book, and that was it. One was a thief who was raised in the slums and that's all he is, one was a maid in the palace and that's all she was. They were very two dimensional and I would've loved to see more depth behind them.
Overall, the plot was ok. It was very fast-paced, almost too fast. It felt like the author was trying to jam as much action as she could into 430 pages without going too into detail about anything, which in certain parts was ok but left a lot of important parts lacking. I also think the book swapped POVs too much. In fact, it was written in the third person, I'm not sure it could even be considered in the character's POV versus just those characters taking place in that chapter.
The relationships between the characters felt very glossed over. It was very 'this is how it is and you just have to understand that without knowing why'. I wish there had just been MORE. I would have gladly committed to this book even if it was 600+ pages if everything had been more detailed and worked on. For a stand-alone novel, it felt like it was missing a lot of depth. Overall, it was truly mid.

To Cage A God truly shocked me in the best way. The world building was FABULOUS, the secrecy and deception was ever present, and the relationships (familial, friendly, enemy and romantic) were all explored so vividly. I absolutely adored the writing style and the imagery infused into every chapter.

The tension? Off the scale. We had spies, magic, secrets, wars, and more. I was absolutely gripped from the start and couldn’t keep up with the revelations and action going on.

I am DESPERATE for more and cannot wait until we see a sequel!!!!
