This book... I'm not sure I've ever read a book that took me on such an emotional roller coaster. I was nervous going in because of the way the last one ended, and then when the war started it felt oddly like covid, and then the book started to break my heart. And then it half-healed it, and then it ended and broke my heart all over again because how is it over? And how is Anne, my kindred spirit, grown up with grown-up children? This book hurt in so many good ways and I loved it so much and came really close to crying multiple times.
I loved Rilla. She'd always been so sweet to me in the previous books, but I loved her in this book and my heart ached as she grew up because she grew up so fast, and her whole world changed as she grew up.

As the books most closely preceding this one in the series indicate, this is something of a deviation from the usual Green Gables formula. I adore the dynamic of the earliest Anne of Green Gables books, but this very different set of stories about the Glen and the Blythes deserves respect. It is more solemn and taxing than the earlier books, but it is a commendable time capsule looking at the everyday citizen’s experience of WWI. Montgomery captures well the vivid day-to-day emotions and thoughts of a person living through an unprecedented terrifying global conflict; she also beautifully paints a broader look at how the world and its individuals changed after such a harrowing time. Even if receiving a recount of historical battles via Susan Baker isn’t my favorite way to revel in Montgomery’s talent for writing dialogue, I left the book still full of a sweet heart-aching love for the old characters and with a sympathetic mournfulness over watching Montgomery’s brilliant mind wrestle with this unprecedented global catastrophe.
Such a beautiful mix of hope and tragedy, comedy and sorrow. A great way to end the series.
In addition to being part of a delightful series, this one covers WWI from the Canadian perspective which was really interesting.
