This review is different from the ones I tend to make, because On Sun Swallowing is a poetry&prose collection. It’s been years since I wanted to read it, when I first discovered Dakota on YouTube. It didn’t let me down: girlhood, rotting thoughts, childhood experiences, adulthood, vulnerability.

Keywords: switchblades, red wine, satin, cigarettes, god.

The vibes are immaculate and the food for thought is deliciously sharp.

Review from Jan. 2025 reading session:

I should be upfront with my bias: I generally find myself having very similar tastes in art / literature / aesthetics as Dakota. Most everything she recommends, I fall in love with too. It’s borderline spooky. That said, I would have loved to have seen this collection’s release even *slightly* pushed back, to give the material time to mature. In much of the work, it feels like Dakota wants to bare her soul by instinct, but holds back and opts for abstract language because the aesthetic of mystery is so alluring. But this is also her very first collection! Who among us can say our first release of anything was our best? I’m profoundly excited to read more of her work, and even more excited to read her debut novel.

I loved some poems, I didn't feel so good about others, but I love Dakota Warren. C'est la vie.

I never believed I would be a poetry girl but I am a Dakota Warren girl and this collection is convincing me to branch out. She just has such a beautiful and intimate way with words that it immediately draws you in and makes you feel even more connected with her and the stories she is telling, the feelings she is evoking. Hands down I am obsessed with her even more now.

I can not put in words how much I adore Dakota and this book
